South Fork is located at the junction of the famous Rio Grande River and its south fork. In the middle of town, where highway 160 & 149 meet, you will find the beginning of the historic Silver Thread National Scenic Byway. This spectacular route follows the winding Rio Grande to its headwaters in the San Juan Mountains.
South Fork Facts:
- Current city limit population of 600 with an area population of 1,200.
- Summer population reaches more than 4,000 residents and tourists
- An elevation of 8,190 feet
- Wolf Creek Pass summit (approx. 20 miles away) averages 400+ inches of snow per year
- Each year South Fork hosts many events including Logger Days, Little Britches Rodeo, Golf Tournaments, a Crafts Festival and our annual South Fork Music Festival.
